Following House passage last month of their version of the budget reconciliation bill that including roughly $715 billion in cuts to Medicaid and accelerated work reporting requirements, action has moved to the Senate.
What's Next
Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has signaled the Senate will look for $600 billion in cuts to Medicaid to pay for the expiring Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and Senate Republican leaders continue to publicly indicate their plans to hold a floor vote before the July 4 recess.
However, the ideological makeup of their majority will almost certainly require further major changes to the text of the bill to secure passage—meaning additional negotiations with the more right-leaning House.
That said, we don’t expect the Senate to make significant positive improvements to the bill, and we are working to fight off further negative impacts during this short window of time.
NOTE: While all senators should be engaged/contacted, please refer to our Senate target list where most immediate outreach is needed.
What You Can Do Now: Outreach to the Senate is at a Critical Stage
Here We Stand. For People. For Care. For Medicaid.
Use our newly developed Medicaid messaging and related resources for ongoing advocacy and communications to defend and strengthen Medicaid:
The messaging toolkit for our “Here We Stand” campaign which includes templates to use for outreach to members of Congress and the media.
The recording of our recent webinar which includes a walk-through of the messaging and how to use the communications resources.
Reach out to your Senators to request in-person or virtual meetings to highlight the impact of proposed House cuts to Medicaid and urge them to vote against cuts to Medicaid that will limit eligibility and enrollment—input your address to identify your lawmakers and find their contact information.
As states also fund a significant share of Medicaid funding, please communicate with your governor’s office about the impact of any Medicaid cuts.
Update on House Oversight and Government Reform DOGE Subcommittee Hearing on Nonprofit Funding
On June 4, the House Oversight and Government Reform DOGE Subcommittee held a hearing entitled “Public Funds, Private Agendas: NGOs Gone Wild” during which Subcommittee leaders aimed to expose “abuses” of tax dollars going to nongovernmental/nonprofit organizations.
We are closely monitoring developments related to new or expanded restrictions on nonprofit operations or funding, in conjunction with our partners at Leadership 18 and the National Council of Nonprofits, and will continue to update you as events warrant.
Stay Tuned
Register now to join us for the next webinar in our “Capitol Conversations” series on July 17 at 1 p.m. ET. We will be sharing information on opportunities to secure federal funding and sharing additional updates on the state of play with the budget reconciliation process.
