URGENT: Contact Your Senators to Urge Them to Oppose Cuts to Medicaid

CONTACT YOUR SENATORS: VOTE NO ON MEDICAID CUTS

Budget Reconciliation Update: THE LATEST

On May 22, the House of Representatives passed their version of the budget reconciliation bill that includes:

  • Roughly $715 billion in cuts to Medicaid, while adding $2–3 trillion to the deficit (based on various estimates).
  • Work reporting requirements which will take effect in December 2026, an accelerated timeline that was a last minute change.
  • Caps to provider taxes — the way a significant majority of states pay for their share of Medicaid — making it hard for states to fill the gaps in funding.

What's Next

  • Action now moves to the Senate where Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has signaled they will look for $600 billion in cuts to Medicaid to pay for the expiring Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
  • While Senate Republican leaders continue to publicly indicate their plans to hold a floor vote before July 4, the ideological makeup of their majority will almost certainly require further major changes to the text of the bill to secure passage—meaning additional negotiations with the more right-leaning House.
  • This means that we still have a significant opportunity to impact the outcome.
    • NOTE: While all senators should be engaged/contacted, please refer to our Senate target list where most immediate outreach is needed.

CONTACT YOUR SENATORS: VOTE NO ON MEDICAID CUTS
  • Reach out to your Senators to request in-person or virtual meetings to highlight the impact of proposed House cuts to Medicaid and urge them to vote against cuts to Medicaid that will limit eligibility and enrollment—input your address to identify your lawmakers and find their contact information.
  • Key message: vote NO on proposed cuts. Please also use our fact sheet and our Community Mobilization Resources webpage to guide your discussions.
  • As states also fund a significant share of Medicaid funding, please communicate with your governor’s office about the impact of any Medicaid cuts.

Stay Tuned

  • Register now to join us for the next webinar in our “Capitol Conversations” series on June 12 at 1 p.m. ET. We will be sharing the latest updates on the budget reconciliation process and the impact on Medicaid and nonprofits.
